The Altmühl Valley Panorama Trail – hiking with 360° views
The Altmühl Valley is a paradise for hikers, who can get up close with and appreciate the typically Bavarian countryside on this trail. No doubt about it, there are steep ascents on this route, but there are also plenty of opportunities to relax.
You really can hike with unimpeded views on the Altmühl Valley Panorama Trail. Fascinating vistas of the gently meandering river and the green hillsides can be admired at dozens of points along the route. There is a unique mix of nature and culture at the Danube breakthrough with Weltenburg Monastery in the distance. It is good that the 200 kilometre hiking trail is split into 10 stages as athletic hikers can complete two stages per day and leisurely hikers can enjoy the many attractions dotted along the short stages. These highlights include the dry grassland slopes with fluttering butterflies, the juniper heaths and the varied forestland. You can even hunt for fossils in a quarry! Hikers are guided over the entire trail by the red and yellow way-markers signposting the Altmühl Valley Panorama Trail. This route is a special treat for hikers, especially with a Bavarian beer after the hike!
TIP: the town of Pappenheim
Manuel Andrack, editor, presenter, author and hiking blogger:
"In the trio of dramas by Friedrich Schiller entitled 'Wallenstein', the playwright wrote: 'I know my fellow Pappenheims'. What a compliment! I recommend getting to know the locals of Pappenheim. Then visit the town and castle and indulge in some local delicacies."
